Good morning. The mornings behind you built a shelf of instruments. Today you count how many you've actually picked up.
Negotiation.
The Negotiation Operating Review
Pull up every negotiation you're running now and every one you closed this quarter, and try to say, for each, what your alternative was worth, where the zone actually sat and what you gave away to reach yes. The ones you can't answer won't be the small ones. They'll be the ones you ran on nerve and afterwards described as instinct.
Lawrence Susskind, Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at MIT and a co-founder of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, wrote Built to Win (2009) with the psychologist Hal Movius to ask a question individuals never think to ask: why does negotiating capability almost never belong to the organisation? Companies invest in sales methodology, procurement systems and project management. Negotiation they treat as a personal talent, something you either have or you don't, so a firm settles a hundred agreements a year and learns nothing transferable from any of them. Susskind and Movius argue for the opposite: shared preparation tools, a record of what was traded and at what price, deal reviews that grade the process rather than the result, and one common language everybody uses before the first session. This is the point at which an elective on negotiation either compounds or evaporates. Instruments become a capability only when something scheduled makes you take them out.
