Negotiation.

Inside Their Head

The question

Write down, in their language rather than yours, the case the other side will put on the table — what they need, what they're frightened of, what their own boss would punish them for conceding — and if you can't fill half a page, why haven't you prepared the half of the room you do not already know by heart?

The idea

Adam Galinsky returns this morning. On Day 74 he supplied the evidence that whoever speaks first shapes the range everyone then argues inside. In 2008, with William Maddux, Debra Gilin and Judith White, he published 'Why It Pays to Get Inside the Head of Your Opponent: The Differential Effects of Perspective Taking and Empathy in Negotiations' in Psychological Science, and the subtitle is the finding. Perspective taking is cognitive: working out what the other side is thinking, what they need, what constrains them. Empathy is emotional: feeling what they feel. Across a series of negotiations the perspective takers found agreements the others could not see, including deals where the numbers alone left no room to settle, and they claimed value while doing it. Empathy did not deliver the same edge; feeling what the other side felt made people more accommodating without making them better negotiators. The trap is assuming that liking someone is the same as understanding them. Warmth builds the relationship. It doesn't find the trade.
