An extension is a wire, not a pipe — current runs in both directions.

Brand Dilution
Think about the last thing your company launched under the main brand name: if you asked twenty long-standing customers today what your name stands for, would the answer come back narrower or broader than it was three years ago — and could you name which launch moved it? Broader sounds like progress. In memory it means fewer people can finish the sentence.
Yesterday's three conditions gated the new product, and the architecture choice behind them set where equity is meant to flow; both look forward, at the thing being launched. Barbara Loken and Deborah Roedder John, both marketing professors at the University of Minnesota, asked the question that research had skipped: never mind the new product, what happens to the parent? Their 1993 paper in the Journal of Marketing, Diluting Brand Beliefs: When Do Brand Extensions Have a Negative Impact?, found that beliefs about a family brand shift when an extension contradicts them — the parent's meaning gets measurably vaguer. The counterintuitive part is where the damage lands. An extension far from the parent does less harm, because customers file it as a special case that says nothing about the brand; the mind builds a subtype and protects the original. The extension sitting close in, typical enough to read as representative, is the one that rewrites the definition. Dilution runs independently of success too, so an extension can sell perfectly well and still soften what the name means, and no sales report will ever raise it. John, Loken and Christopher Joiner returned to the question in 1998 and found the flagship product itself holds up rather well. It's the family name, the thing carrying everything else, that gives ground first.
