Good morning. Take your name off the product and ask again. Whatever changes is your brand.
Brand Management.
Customer-Based Brand Equity
If you handed your product to a stranger with the label stripped off — no name, no colours, no story about who made it — what would they pay for it, and what would they pay the moment you put the label back on? If you can't set those two numbers side by side, you've spent years funding an asset you have never once measured.
In 1993 the Journal of Marketing published a paper by Kevin Lane Keller — later the author of Strategic Brand Management, the standard textbook on the subject — that did something the field had been avoiding. It defined brand equity from the customer's side: the differential effect of brand knowledge on how a customer responds to the marketing of that brand. Read it slowly, because every word is carrying weight. Differential means it is a difference between two responses, not a quality your brand possesses. Brand knowledge means the difference lives inside a customer's memory rather than in your logo files or your balance sheet. And response means it shows up in behaviour — what they'll pay, what they'll try, what they'll forgive — not in how warmly they say they feel about you. The measurement follows straight from the definition: put the same product in front of people twice, once unbranded and once branded, and watch what moves. Pepsi built years of advertising on the blind half of that test alone, and it worked precisely because a blind answer and a branded answer are two different answers. The trap is treating equity as a stock of goodwill you have accumulated. It isn't a stock. It's a gap, it gets re-measured every time somebody chooses, and it can run negative.
