Morning. Your brand isn't a thing. It's a node, and everything you've ever done is hanging off it.
Brand Management.
The Association Network
Write down the six words that arrive in a customer's head the second they hear your name — not the six you'd like, the six you'd bet money on — and then ask which of them a competitor couldn't claim by dinner tonight. Most brands discover that everything strong is generic and everything unique is faint. That is the whole problem, on one page.
In 1975 Psychological Review carried a paper by Allan Collins and Elizabeth Loftus — Loftus far better known for her research on eyewitness memory — extending M. Ross Quillian's theory of spreading activation and clearing up the misreadings of it. Memory, on that model, is a network: concepts are nodes, related concepts are joined by links, and activating one node sends activation travelling out along those links to whatever is connected. Say bread, and the node for butter is already warm before you have decided to think about it. Keller pointed that structure at brands. A brand is a node with everything attached to it that a customer has ever met — the product, the price, the shop, the person who answered the phone, the ad, the friend who mentioned it — and brand image is nothing more mystical than the set of associations hanging off that node. Three properties of those links do all the work. Strength is how reliably an association fires when the node is cued. Favourability is whether the customer actually wants the thing that fires. Uniqueness is whether a rival owns the same link. All three have to hold at once: a strong, favourable association that everyone else also owns keeps you in the running and wins you no argument, while a unique one nobody can retrieve isn't in the game at all. One carve-out before you spend anything against that reading, because this is the point where it gets set against Day 43. Mental availability is about how reliably you are retrieved in a buying situation, and the strong, favourable, category-shaped associations are exactly what deliver it — they are worth paying to keep firing, however many rivals own them too. Keller's uniqueness column decides which meaning you can defend once a buyer is choosing between two names. It doesn't decide how much reach you buy.
