The question

Between a customer knowing you exist, knowing what you are for, thinking well of you, feeling something when you turn up, and organising a piece of their life around you — where does your brand actually stop, and how much of last quarter's spend went to a step you'd already cleared? The honest answer for most businesses is that they're known well enough and stand for nothing in particular, and the money went to being seen again.

The idea

Eight years after defining brand equity as a gap, Kevin Lane Keller published the model that says how the gap gets built. Building Customer-Based Brand Equity: A Blueprint for Creating Strong Brands appeared as a Marketing Science Institute report in 2001, laying the work out as a pyramid of six blocks answering four questions a customer asks in order. Who are you — salience, whether you come to mind at all. What are you — performance, what the thing does, and imagery, what using it says about the person. What about you — judgements on quality and credibility, and feelings, what happens in them when your name appears. And what about you and me — resonance, where a preference turns into part of how somebody lives. The levels are sequential, which is the whole use of the model: you can't build meaning on a name nobody retrieves, or manufacture resonance on a brand that means nothing in particular. None of this overturns Day 43. Byron Sharp's evidence is about how categories grow — many light buyers, reach beating devotion. Keller's pyramid is about how one brand's meaning gets built inside the buyers it already has, and resonance is a margin and defensibility asset rather than a growth engine. The trap is spending at the wrong altitude — more awareness for a brand people already know but can't distinguish, or a loyalty scheme bolted onto indifference.
