Morning. Lending your name to a new product feels free. Three conditions decide whether it is.

The Three Conditions
Take the thing you're planning to launch under your existing name: could a customer who has never seen your org chart tell you, in one sentence, why that product belongs to you rather than to anybody else — and would they be right? If the answer needs your capability deck to make sense, you're paying full price to build a second brand while telling yourself you got one free.
Day 19 chose the architecture — monolithic, endorsed, or a house of brands — and settled how equity is meant to flow. This morning does something narrower: it gates one launch. In January 1990 David Aaker, then at Berkeley's Haas School, and Kevin Lane Keller, then at Stanford, published Consumer Evaluations of Brand Extensions in the Journal of Marketing, and turned the borrow-or-build instinct into something you can test. They put hypothetical extensions of well-known brands in front of consumers and measured what actually moved the verdict. Quality on its own didn't. A parent held in high regard bought the extension nothing unless customers could also see a fit — products used together, products doing the same job, or a new product needing a skill they believed the firm already had. Quality and fit had to arrive together. Then a third result, which nobody expects the first time they read it: extensions into things customers judged easy to make were rated lower, not higher. A famous name laid over a trivial product reads as a name being cashed rather than extended. The trap is that fit is settled in the customer's head and nowhere else — not in your capability deck, not in your supply chain, not in the paragraph your strategy team wrote about adjacency. If the connection needs explaining, it isn't a connection. It's a hope with your logo on it.
