Good morning. Everything you've built either shows up in the price, or it doesn't show up anywhere.
Brand Management.
The Price Premium
Name the one thing your buyers would genuinely buy instead of you, then work out how far its price would have to fall before they'd walk away from yours — and of that difference, how much survives the standing discount, the quarterly promotion and the deal your best rep closed last Friday? Most operators can guess the first number. Almost nobody has calculated the second, and the second is the only one that ever reached the bank.
David Aaker spent his career at Berkeley's Haas School of Business trying to turn brand equity into something a board could act on. In Building Strong Brands (1996), and in a companion article in the California Management Review the same year, he set out the Brand Equity Ten — measures spread across loyalty, perceived quality, associations, awareness and market behaviour — and he put price premium first, writing that it may be the best single measure of brand equity available. The first morning of this elective measured your gap against nothing at all, which is the cleanest experiment and the least actionable one, because nobody in your market sells a nameless version of your product. This measures it against the thing your buyer would genuinely put in the basket instead. Every other indicator is a proxy: awareness might not convert, esteem might not translate, warmth is cheap to feel and cheaper to say out loud. A premium is the one number where somebody has already chosen with money they could have kept — and it isn't sitting anywhere in your accounts. It has to be asked for deliberately, with a named comparator, a question that forces a trade-off, and an answer given by somebody with something to lose. Most operators skip all of that and quote a satisfaction score instead, which measures how people feel rather than what they'd give up.
