Morning. Your identity isn't what you designed. It's whatever survives the hundred people who reproduce it.
Brand Management.
The Standards Manual
Pull up the last three things your business put in front of a customer — a deck, an invoice, a social post — and hold them beside each other: is it the same blue, the same mark at the same weight, the same two typefaces, and did somebody have to make a judgement call to produce any of them? Every judgement call you leave available is a small withdrawal from the same account.
You know by now that repetition is the whole mechanism, so the interesting question isn't whether to be consistent — it's who actually has to be. In 1956 Thomas Watson Jr. put design at the centre of IBM and brought in Eliot Noyes to run it; Noyes brought in Paul Rand, who gave the company a logotype and then something rarer: written instructions telling everybody else exactly how to reproduce it. Two decades later Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn did the same job for NASA, whose new logotype was approved in 1975 and followed a year later by a graphics standards manual specifying its reproduction across an agency that puts its name on everything from a letterhead to a launch vehicle. Neither document is a brand book. A brand book is adjectives about who you are, written for people who already care; a standards manual is a rulebook written for people who never will — exact colour values, clear space as a fraction of the mark, minimum sizes, one approved lock-up, a short list of named exceptions. The trap is writing it as taste. 'Use the logo confidently' has decided nothing, and every line like it hands the decision straight back. NASA retired that logotype in 1992 and reinstated it in 2020, and it was still legible after a generation in a drawer — because while it was in service, nobody was permitted to interpret it.
