Good morning. Before your name means anything to a customer, it already sounds like something.

The Sound of the Name
If you handed your brand name to a stranger who knew nothing about you and asked whether it sounds fast or slow, big or small, hard or soft, would their answer match what you actually sell — or is your marketing quietly paying, on every new customer for the life of the business, to overwrite an impression the name made first?
In 2004 Eric Yorkston and Geeta Menon published a paper in the Journal of Consumer Research with a fictional ice cream in it. They invented two brand names, Frish and Frosh, described an identical product under each, and asked people what they thought of it. Frosh was rated smoother, creamier and richer. Nothing had changed but one vowel. Their argument is that the inference is automatic: the sound of a name gets processed before anyone consciously evaluates anything, and whatever that sound suggests is absorbed into the judgement of the product itself. The effect is far older than marketing. Wolfgang Köhler demonstrated a version of it in Gestalt Psychology in 1929, pairing two invented words with a jagged shape and a rounded one and finding that people put the jagged word with the jagged shape; the demonstration has been replicated across languages ever since. Front vowels — the ee in sleek, the i in mini — tend to read small, light and quick. Back vowels — the o in bold, the ah in calm — tend to read large, heavy and substantial. Hard stops give a name a clipped, engineered edge, while the softer continuous sounds make it feel smooth and unhurried. The trap is that this runs whether or not you've thought about it. You aren't deciding whether your name carries a size; you're only deciding whether it carries the one you meant.
