Identity Myths

The question

When your customers argue with themselves about who they're supposed to be — at work, at home, in the country they live in — does your brand have a single thing to say to that argument, or does it only ever have things to say about itself? A brand that can only talk about itself competes on features and price forever, because that is the only ground it has left.

The idea

Douglas Holt taught marketing at Harvard Business School and went on to hold a marketing chair at Oxford's Saïd Business School. His 2004 book, How Brands Become Icons, is an argument with almost everything else on this reading list. The conventional model — Holt calls it mind-share branding — says you win by owning a few consistent associations in enough heads. His objection is that it can't explain the brands people actually revere. Coke, Budweiser, Nike, Volkswagen and Mountain Dew didn't become icons by being better remembered. They became icons by performing what Holt calls an identity myth: a story that resolved a contradiction the country was living inside, between what people were told they ought to be and what their lives actually allowed. Nike's Just Do It arrived in 1988 and worked because it took the will to overcome from a world America found credible — the playground, the athlete with nothing — and handed it to people whose own lives had stalled. The trap is that myths expire. A contradiction belongs to a moment, so the brands that stayed iconic rewrote the story once the moment passed, which is exactly the inconsistency the conventional model warns you against. Most brands never face that problem, for the simple reason that they aren't saying anything about the world at all.
