The Brand Identity Prism

The question

Can you say what your brand tells a buyer about themselves — not what it does for them, but who it makes them in other people's eyes and in their own — or would you be inventing half of that answer as you went? Whatever you'd leave blank, the market has already filled in without you.

The idea

Jean-Noël Kapferer taught marketing strategy at HEC Paris, and in 1991 he published Les marques, capital de l'entreprise — brands as the capital of the firm — which reached English readers the following year as Strategic Brand Management, confusingly the same title Keller would later give a different book. Inside it is a diagram he called the brand identity prism: six facets, read on two axes. The top is the picture of the sender — physique, the tangible thing and what it does, and personality, the character it would have if it were a person. The bottom is the picture of the recipient — reflection, the sort of buyer the brand shows to the world, and self-image, what the buyer feels about themselves using it. Down the middle sit relationship, the kind of dealings on offer, and culture, the value system the whole thing draws on. Split it the other way and three facets are externalised and visible — physique, relationship, reflection — while three are internalised — personality, culture, self-image. Kapferer's argument was that identity is a whole rather than a list: fill in all six or you haven't described a brand, you've described a product wearing adjectives. The trap is filling in two facets beautifully. Most companies can write physique and personality, leave culture, reflection and self-image blank, and never notice a competitor moving into the empty rooms without touching the product at all.
