Good morning. Fame is the last thing to go — which makes it useless as a warning.
Brand Management.
The Brand Asset Valuator
Of everyone in your category who knows exactly who you are, how many could say what you're for that nobody else could claim — and if that number had been falling for two years while your fame held steady, what in your reporting would have told you? Knowledge is the slowest of the four pillars to move. It'll keep reporting a healthy brand for years after the thing that earned it has gone.
Young & Rubicam launched the Brand Asset Valuator in 1993 as a continuous survey of brands across categories and countries, and its value comes from one structural decision: it scores four pillars, and it insists that two of them are early and two are late. Differentiation is how distinct you are from everything else on offer. Relevance is whether a person can see that it's for someone like them. Together they make brand strength — vitality, in the original BAV terminology — and they lead, moving well before any of it shows up in money. Esteem is how well you are regarded. Knowledge is how well you are understood. Together they make brand stature, and they lag: they're a record of what you already did, sometimes years ago. Ed Lebar, who ran BrandAsset Valuator at Young & Rubicam, and his colleague John Gerzema built The Brand Bubble (Jossey-Bass, 2008) on that asymmetry — brands whose differentiation had quietly drained while their fame held, still being valued on the pillar that had stopped meaning anything. The resonance pyramid told you which step you're standing on. This one tells you which way you're moving, and it's the only instrument here that can warn you early. The trap is reading yourself by your stature: esteem and knowledge are the two numbers that feel like proof, and they're the two describing a business you may no longer be running.
