The question

Somewhere in this module you decided most of it was true, and then changed roughly one thing about how you actually work. Which document would you open this morning to prove otherwise? If there isn't one, the word for what you have done here is agreement, not fluency.

The idea

W. Edwards Deming was an American statistician who spent the 1950s teaching Japanese manufacturers to read variation as information, and who finally set the argument out for Western management in Out of the Crisis (1982). Two of its claims decide how this page gets run. The first is a distribution. From his own experience Deming estimated that ninety-four per cent of trouble belongs to the system and six per cent to special causes, which makes the instinct to blame the operator wrong almost every time. When your AI work goes wrong, an unwritten standard or a missing check is a likelier culprit than a careless person. The second is the cycle he credited to Walter Shewhart and later insisted should read Plan, Do, Study, Act, on the grounds that checking whether you hit the target isn't the same as studying what the process is telling you. An AI workflow is a process with variation in it. You review it the way you'd review any other.
