The question

Of the decisions AI is quietly starting to make in your work, which one would cost you the most if it were confidently wrong?

The idea

As AI gets woven into more of your work, the real skill stops being 'can I use it' and becomes 'where do I stay in the loop'. The danger isn't that AI is wrong — it's that it's wrong confidently, in fluent, professional prose, on the small fraction of tasks where wrong is expensive. Fluency means matching your oversight to the cost of an error. For low-stakes, easily-checked work, let it run. For work where a confident mistake damages a customer, a number, or your credibility, you stay on the controls. The operators who get burned aren't the ones who use AI too much or too little — they're the ones who apply the same level of trust to everything.

The framework

Sort the work by the cost of being wrong.
Before you hand a task to AI, ask one question: if this came back confidently wrong and I didn't catch it, what would it cost? A typo in an internal note costs nothing. A wrong figure in a board deck, a fabricated fact to a customer, or a flawed assumption in a strategy costs a great deal. The cost of error — not the difficulty of the task — sets how closely you watch.

Verify what's checkable; own what's not.
AI is brilliant at producing things and unreliable at guaranteeing they're true. Anything factual — numbers, names, quotes, claims — gets verified at the source before it leaves your hands. Anything that rests on judgement, relationships, or your reputation stays yours to decide. Use the model to draft the board summary; never let it invent the number inside it.

Keep the skill you're tempted to outsource.
There's a difference between offloading a task and offloading a capability. Letting AI draft your emails is leverage. Letting it do all your thinking — until you can no longer structure an argument or pressure-test a plan yourself — is a slow erosion of the very judgement that makes you valuable. Fluency means using AI to extend your thinking, not replace it: staying sharp enough to know when it's wrong.

Set your loop on purpose, then automate the rest.
For each recurring AI workflow, set the oversight level deliberately: review every output, spot-check one in five, or let it run untouched. Write it down so it's a decision, not a drift. Then trust the automated lane fully and watch the supervised lane closely. The goal isn't maximum caution or maximum speed — it's the right amount of human, in the right place, on purpose.
