The question

Which task you repeat every week would change most if a sharp, tireless analyst sat beside you — and why haven't you handed it over yet?

The idea

AI fluency isn't about knowing every tool. It's about knowing where the leverage is. Like the 80/20 rule, the return on AI is wildly uneven: a small share of your work — the repetitive, language-heavy, first-draft, synthesis-and-research tasks — accounts for almost all of the time it can give back. The rest is judgement, relationships, and taste, where AI assists but doesn't replace. Most people get this backwards. They either dismiss AI entirely, or sprinkle it everywhere and feel busy without getting leverage. The fluent operator does something narrower and more valuable: they audit their actual week, find the handful of recurring tasks where a capable assistant would compound, and build a habit around those. Leverage comes from depth on the few, not novelty on the many.

The framework

List the work you repeat, not the work you enjoy.
Write down every task you did more than twice last week. Be specific: 'drafted the weekly update', 'summarised five customer calls', 'researched three competitors', 'turned messy notes into a plan'. You're looking for repetition and language — the two signals that a task is a candidate for leverage. One-off judgement calls and relationship moments are not on this list; they're where your time should move toward, not away from.

Sort each task: automate, augment, or own.
Automate = AI can do the whole thing to a standard you'd accept with a glance (formatting, first-pass summaries, reshaping data). Augment = AI does the heavy lifting but you direct and finish it (a strategy draft, a research synthesis, a tricky email). Own = the task lives or dies on your judgement, relationships, or taste — keep it yours. The leverage is concentrated in 'augment': the tasks where AI does 80% and your 20% makes it sing.

Move your saved time, don't just bank it.
Leverage is worthless if the time you free up refills with more of the same. The point of handing off the 80% is to spend more hours on the 20% only you can do — the strategy, the relationships, the decisions that compound. Decide in advance where the reclaimed time goes. An AI habit with no destination just makes you faster at staying busy.

Build one repeatable habit before you add a second.
Fluency compounds through reps, not breadth. Take the single highest-leverage 'augment' task and build a reliable routine around it — the same brief, the same review step, every time — until it's automatic. Only then add the next. People who try to AI-everything at once end up trusting none of it. People who get one workflow genuinely excellent build the instinct that makes the next ten obvious.
