The question

What can the software on your desk already do without asking you first — send on your behalf, move money, write to the live system? If that list takes more than a minute to assemble, the permissions weren't set by anyone who priced the downside. They were set by whoever configured it fastest.

The idea

Site Reliability Engineering, the 2016 book edited by Betsy Beyer, Chris Jones, Jennifer Petoff and Niall Richard Murphy, is Google's account of running systems that fail constantly without ever failing catastrophically. Its central move is to stop asking whether a change is correct and start asking how far the damage travels if it isn't. Releases go to a small slice first, a canary, while the team watches for harm. Permissions are scoped so a fault in one service can't reach another. And the failure the system is allowed to absorb is budgeted in advance, because chasing perfect reliability costs more than it returns. Canarying, scoped permissions and error budgets are all theirs. Blast radius is the industry's shorthand for what they're all protecting. All of it was written for software that acts without asking. A model that only suggests has a blast radius of one bad paragraph; a model wired into your inbox, your calendar, your repository or your payment rails has the blast radius of whatever you handed it. The trap is the permission screen, which always arrives before the consequence does — you grant at the moment you know least, and nothing afterwards ever asks you again.
