The Operating Review

The question

When did you last read your whole business in one sitting — margin, cash, pipeline, constraint, brand — rather than reacting to whichever number shouted loudest that week, and if the honest answer is never, why haven't you built the hour it takes?

The idea

This morning isn't a new framework; it is everything behind you becoming one instrument. Alfred Sloan ran General Motors on standardised monthly figures a century ago; Amazon formalised the same discipline as the Weekly Business Review; every serious operator keeps some version, because a business can only be steered whole. Each recent morning gave you one gauge — contribution margin, cash conversion, break-even, the balance sheet; discovery, MEDDIC, sales velocity; the constraint, availability, positioning, value pricing, the 60/40 split; SCQA, the retrospective, the delegation ladder. Separately, each answers a narrow question. Assembled on one page, monthly, in a fixed order, they answer the only question that matters: is the machine working, and where does it need you next. The trap is reviewing by crisis, where the loudest number sets the agenda — or building a forty-metric dashboard nobody reads. The review is a page, not a dashboard.
