The Pre-Mortem

4 min read·Apply by lunch

The question

How do you find the fatal flaw in a plan before the plan fails — not after?

The idea

The pre-mortem, developed by psychologist Gary Klein, inverts the post-mortem. Instead of asking 'what went wrong?' after failure, it asks 'it's 12 months from now and this project has failed catastrophically — what happened?' The technique exploits prospective hindsight: the human brain is dramatically better at explaining an imagined failure than predicting a future one. Running the pre-mortem before a major commitment surfaces the risks that optimism bias and groupthink have buried.
