Every channel has conditions attached. Your product meets them or it doesn't — and there's nobody to negotiate with.

Product-Channel Fit
Take the acquisition channel you keep hearing works — the one a competitor appears to run beautifully — and ask what that channel demands of a product before it will carry one: how quickly the value has to land, how broad the appeal has to be, how much a single customer has to be worth in a year? Set your own product honestly beside those demands and the usual answer is that the channel was never available to you, which is a far cheaper thing to learn this morning than after a quarter of spend.
Brian Balfour was VP of Growth at HubSpot before founding Reforge, and in July 2017 he published Product Channel Fit Will Make or Break Your Growth Strategy, one of a linked set of essays laying out four fits a growing business has to hold at once — market-product, product-channel, channel-model and model-market. The argument fits in a sentence: products are built to fit channels, and channels do not mould to products. His reasoning is about control rather than cleverness. You own every decision inside your product. You own none of the rules of a channel — not the auction, not the ranking, not the interface that gets switched off one Tuesday — so the only thing available to bend is the thing you own. Each channel then arrives with requirements attached. Virality wants value that lands almost immediately, a proposition broad enough that most of someone's contacts qualify, and a product the network genuinely improves. Paid marketing wants that same speed to value and a transactional model underneath it. Search built on what users write wants users who'll write something, and a reason for them to bother. Balfour's history of games carries the point: PopCap couldn't lift web-portal games onto Facebook, Zynga built for Facebook, then Zynga couldn't lift those onto mobile, and Supercell built for mobile. Two mornings on, nineteen candidates get scored and three get tested. This filter runs first, and it runs on paper.
