Good morning. One number went up last month. Underneath it, five things moved, and two of them moved against you.

Growth.

The question

Your customer base moved by some net figure last month — could you break that figure into the flows underneath it, or do you only have the number at the bottom? If it's only the number, you've been steering by an average, and the flow cancelling your work is the one nobody is paid to watch.

The idea

Jonathan Hsu helped build and lead Facebook's data science team before joining Social Capital as a partner, and in 2017 he published a series there called Diligence at Social Capital. Part one, Accounting for User Growth, does something deceptively plain: it treats a user base the way an accountant treats a balance sheet. This period's total is last period's total, plus new users, plus resurrected ones, minus those who churned. Price the same identity in revenue rather than heads and two more flows appear — expansion, where existing customers spend more, and contraction, where they spend less. Five flows. Growth is only what's left after they net off against each other. Two companies can report identical net growth while one compounds and the other bails water, and the net figure can't tell you which one you're running. The trap is that you'll run the flows you enjoy. Acquisition is visible and budgeted, expansion feels like selling, and the other three belong to nobody in particular — so effort pours into the top of the funnel while the fifth flow quietly eats it, month after month, and the only symptom is a number that won't move as fast as the work suggests it should.
