Morning. There's a version of your business where you never win another customer — and it still grows.
Growth.
Net Revenue Retention
Take only the customers who were already paying you a year ago — nobody you've won since — and ask what that same group pays you this month: is it more than it was, and if you've never run that number, what have you been calling growth?
Earlier in this elective you sorted a period into five flows and read new plus expansion against churn plus contraction across the whole book. Freeze a single cohort instead and the same arithmetic answers a question the blended version structurally can't. Bessemer Venture Partners published its Top 10 Laws of Cloud Computing and SaaS in 2010, and among software founders the document circulated like scripture. Its core insistence was that a subscription business can't be read through bookings. What matters is committed monthly recurring revenue — Bessemer's CMRR — and what happens to it after the signature, which is why measuring churn and renewal sits among the ten laws. A company adding thirty and losing twenty-eight isn't the company its bookings chart describes. Net revenue retention takes one cohort — everyone paying you in a given month — ignores every customer you've won since, and asks what that same group pays a year later. You read the answer against one hundred. Below it, you're refilling a bath with the plug out, and every dollar of acquisition is replacing rather than adding. Above it, the base grows on its own and new customers are genuinely incremental. Run it across the whole book instead and this year's arrivals quietly cover last year's departures, which is the reading you were trying to escape.
