Do Things That Don't Scale

The question

How many of your customers could you name from memory, and of those, how many did you personally go out and find — not a form they filled in, not a campaign, you? If you're waiting for a channel to work before you have ever hand-sold the thing to ten people, the honest diagnosis is that you don't have a distribution problem yet. You have an evidence problem.

The idea

Paul Graham co-founded Y Combinator in 2005 and spent the decade after it watching hundreds of companies through their first year. His 2013 essay Do Things That Don't Scale exists because of one recurring failure: founders build something, launch it, and then wait, as though a good product were a self-starting engine. It is not. Startups take off, Graham wrote, because the founders make them take off — by hand, in ways that look faintly ridiculous written down. Airbnb's founders went door to door in New York, recruiting hosts one at a time and helping the ones they had fix their listings. Stripe's founders, when somebody said they would give it a try, would ask for the laptop and set it up on the spot; Y Combinator still calls the move a Collison installation. Wufoo posted a handwritten thank-you note to every new user. None of it scales, and that is the entire point: what the unscalable start buys you isn't growth, it's evidence, because the only way to learn what people actually want is to serve a few of them so closely that you can't hide from the answer. The trap sits at the other end. Founders who enjoy the hand-built phase run it long past its usefulness.
