Good morning. Every instrument this module handed you comes out today, onto one page.

The Money Map
Trace a single dollar your business earned last month, from the moment a customer decided to part with it, through the costs it met on the way down, into the cash that actually arrived, and out again into whatever you spent it on next: can you name the instrument that governs every one of those handovers, or does the trail go quiet somewhere in the middle, at exactly the point you've been avoiding since this module began?
Accounting profit had become the scoreboard while the thing being scored was cash, and the two part company for years at a time. That was the complaint. The diagram was the answer. Alfred Rappaport, then a professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, published both in Creating Shareholder Value in 1986, and he called the diagram the shareholder value network: a map running from the decisions managers actually make, operating and investment and financing, through seven value drivers to the money the business finally produces. The seven are worth committing to memory. Sales growth. Operating profit margin. The cash tax rate. Investment in working capital. Investment in fixed capital. The cost of capital. And the number of years your advantage is expected to last. Every morning of this module has been one of those drivers taken apart. Rappaport's contribution wasn't another metric; it was the insistence that any operating decision be traceable, on a single page, to the money it eventually turns into.
