Share of Search
If your share of the market started slipping nine months from now, what would you be able to see between now and then — and is there a single instrument on your monthly pack that would move before the revenue did? I'll answer that one for you: no, which is why the first sign of trouble is usually a quarter you can no longer fix.
Share of search is exactly what it sounds like. Of all the searches made for brands in your category, it's the proportion that name you — and Google Trends gives it away for nothing. The measure was pushed into practice by the British strategist James Hankins and taken up by Les Binet, head of effectiveness at adam&eveDDB, who presented the analysis to the IPA in 2020. Binet tested it across three categories with almost nothing in common — cars, domestic energy and mobile handsets — and kept finding the same shape: share of search tracks share of market closely, and it moves first. The lead runs longest where buyers take longest, which in his set meant cars. He also traced the chain backwards. Advertising lifts share of search, and share of search lifts share of market. So you're holding two instruments at once: a forecast of where your sales are heading, and a read on whether last quarter's marketing did anything at all. It has almost nothing to do with your paid keywords. It's a measure of how often your name is the one that comes to mind.
