Make the Buying Easy

The question

Between your buyer first suspecting they have a problem and money actually moving, how many separate jobs do they have to complete inside their own company — and for how many of those have you supplied anything more useful than encouragement?

The idea

Nicholas Toman, Brent Adamson and Cristina Gomez published The New Sales Imperative in Harvard Business Review in March 2017, out of CEB's research into how B2B customers actually buy. Prescribing rather than presenting is the right instinct and their data supports it, but their more useful finding is about where the difficulty actually sits. Senior executives asked to describe a complex purchase in one word reached for hard, awful, painful, minefield. A typical solutions purchase takes twice as long as the customer expects, and 65 per cent said they'd spent as much time as they'd allowed for the entire purchase just getting ready to speak to a rep. Most of that struggle happens before you appear and has nothing to do with you: working out whether the problem deserves attention at all, sizing it against everything else competing for the same money, arguing out build versus buy, aligning people who report to different bosses and disagree about what the problem even is. So CEB's instruction is to map the journey supplier-agnostically — the struggle they'd have buying from anybody — and then take steps out of it. Across three large studies, purchase ease was by far the biggest driver of deal quality, and suppliers who made buying easy were 62 per cent likelier to win a high-quality sale, meaning one where the customer bought the premium offering. The trap is mapping your own pipeline and calling it their journey.
