Adding Up, Not Sizing Up
Think about the last person you hired: when the decision actually got made, was there a total on the page — a number per candidate, produced by a rule fixed weeks earlier — and could every person in the room see it, or was there a sheet in front of one of you and a conversation in front of the rest? If no total existed, you'll never know whether your process works, because you never wrote down what it predicted.
Paul Meehl was a clinical psychologist at the University of Minnesota, and in 1954 he published a short book that made him permanently unpopular with much of his own profession. Clinical versus Statistical Prediction asked a narrow question: given the same evidence, does the expert reading it as a whole beat a simple formula that adds the pieces up? He gathered the head-to-head comparisons that existed and found the formula matched or beat the expert almost every time. Forty-two years later, William Grove and Meehl revisited it across 136 studies, spanning everything from medical diagnosis to who reoffends to who succeeds in a job. Sixty-four favoured the mechanical rule. Sixty-four came out roughly level. Eight favoured the human. Notice what isn't being argued here: nobody's telling you to drop the interview. The evidence can be as rich and as human as you like. What loses is the last step — the moment you sweep the scores off the table and size the candidate up. The trap is that this step feels like the most skilled thing you do all week. It's the only part of your process that's ever been tested against arithmetic and lost.
