Morning. Bad work almost never starts in the studio. It starts on the page that sent someone there.

The Creative Brief

The question

Think about the last piece of marketing you commissioned from somebody else — the landing page, the campaign, the deck: what did you actually hand over, a description of the product with a deadline attached, or a named person, the belief they hold today, and the single thing that could move it? Whatever wasn't on that page came back to you as three rounds of revisions.

The idea

Account planning has a birth year, and it's 1968. Stephen King, a researcher in J. Walter Thompson's London office, had already handed the agency its planning method four years earlier — the T-Plan, introduced in June 1964, which refused to start from the product and started instead from the response the advertising was meant to produce in one particular person. What King won in 1968 was the argument for a department to run it, and JWT named that department account planning. Across town Stanley Pollitt had reached the same conclusion by another route, and when he co-founded Boase Massimi Pollitt that same year he built it in structurally: a researcher sat beside the account handler on every piece of business, there to represent the buyer while the work was being made rather than to grade it afterwards. What both men were really defending was a document. The creative brief is one page that converts a business problem into a proposition, and its questions haven't changed much since: who are we talking to, what do they believe now, what should they believe instead, why would they believe it, and what one thing must this work say. The trap is that a brief describing the product feels complete — accurate, thorough, signed by everybody — and it quietly hands the hardest thinking to whoever happens to be writing the words.
