Morning. You've found who feels the pain and who funds it. Neither of them can build the agreement you need.
Sales.
The Mobiliser
In your largest live deal, how many people have to agree before anybody can say yes — and which of them has ever argued your case when you weren't there?
Brent Adamson and Matthew Dixon followed The Challenger Sale with a harder book. The Challenger Customer, written in 2015 with their CEB colleagues Pat Spenner and Nick Toman, turned the microscope off the seller and onto the buying group — where CEB's research put an average of 5.4 people inside a typical business purchase, with the odds of anything getting bought falling as that number climbs. The failure mode is not a preference for a rival. It is that the group cannot agree with itself, so it does nothing, and selling harder to any one member does nothing about a problem living in the gaps between them. The book sorts stakeholders into seven behavioural profiles and finds only three of them — the Go-Getter, the Teacher and the Sceptic — actually mobilise, meaning they will take an idea and drive it through their own organisation against resistance. The other four don't: three of them talk, and one actively blocks. Mistake a Blocker for a Talker and you will spend a quarter feeding material to the person using it against you. Day 40's MEDDIC carries a champion among its six checks — somebody inside who wants this to happen and will say so. Mobiliser is the harder version of the same person, because wanting it and being able to carry it through a building are different capacities. This morning is what comes after finding them — because the case that decides your deal gets made in meetings you'll never attend, by somebody using words you didn't write.
