Good morning. The most valuable thing you can carry into a buyer's office isn't your product. It's a fact about their business they don't have.
Sales.
Commercial Teaching
Of the last ten meetings you took with prospective customers, in how many did the buyer leave knowing something about their own business that they didn't know walking in — and could they still name it a week later? For most of us the honest answer is one, and it was an accident.
In 2011 Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson published The Challenger Sale, built on Corporate Executive Board research across roughly 6,000 sales representatives. The famous finding was about profiles: the reps who outperformed weren't the relationship builders most firms hire for, but the ones who taught the customer something, tailored the message to whoever was listening, and took control of the conversation about money. More useful than the profile is the pitch CEB reverse-engineered from it, which they called Commercial Teaching. It runs in a fixed order and the product arrives last — a warmer about their world, a reframe that upends the assumption they walked in with, evidence until the problem is undeniable, the cost to the specific person hearing it, a new way of operating, and only then your capability. If that shape feels familiar it should: it's Day 47's SCQA aimed at a buyer, situation into complication into the question forming in their head into the answer. What Commercial Teaching adds is a gate SCQA has no equivalent for, and it's the part almost everyone skips. The reframe has to be true and genuinely new to somebody who runs that business daily, and the conclusion it leads to has to land somewhere you're unusually good. The trap is that most insight passes the first test beautifully and fails the second.
