Good morning. Climb far enough up any benefit and you'll arrive exactly where your rivals already are: peace of mind.

The Benefit Ladder
Take the line you use most often to describe what you sell, ask why that matters, then ask why that matters again, and keep going until you're standing on something like peace of mind or freedom or growth — how many rungs did that take, and at which one did your answer stop being something your two nearest rivals could have written word for word?
In 1982 the Journal of Marketing published Jonathan Gutman's means-end chain model, which argued that people don't buy attributes; they buy the chain running from an attribute to a consequence to a value they already hold. The climb will feel familiar — it's Day 4's move from the functional job to the emotional one, formalised and extended a rung. The attribute is what the thing is: the ingredient, the spec, the number of hours. The consequence is what happens to the buyer because of it, functional first and then personal. The value is the end state that consequence serves, of the kind Milton Rokeach had catalogued in 1973: security, belonging, accomplishment, independence. Thomas Reynolds and Gutman later turned the model into an interviewing method — laddering, published in the Journal of Advertising Research in 1988 — where you ask 'and why does that matter to you?' one rung at a time until the answer stops moving. What the ladder adds to Day 4 is a ceiling. Climb far enough and every chain in a category converges on the same short list of human values, which is why so much marketing arrives at confidence, freedom and peace of mind: true, unarguable, and word for word what the competitor concluded. You can't disagree with a line like that, and you can't be moved by one either. The rung that sells is the last one before that convergence.
