The question

Across your last three calls, how many objections did you actually receive — not handled well or badly, just received — and can you say, to the minute, what you had said in the four or five minutes before each one arrived?

The idea

Neil Rackham's Huthwaite team — the twelve-year, 35,000-call observation study behind Day 39 — produced one result that still gets almost no airtime. Everyone quotes the finding about questions. Almost nobody quotes what the same data said about objections: the sellers who collected a lot of them weren't unlucky, and they weren't bad at handling them. They were generating them. Objection handling has its own shelf in every sales-training catalogue, and Rackham's numbers pointed the other way — the strongest performers in the study simply had fewer objections to handle, and the difference showed up in what they had said in the minutes beforehand. That turns the objection from an event into a reading. It's not weather that arrives; it's an output your own call produced, which means it can be counted, timestamped and traced backwards to a sentence. Day 39 tells you how to run the front of a call. This is narrower and more mechanical: it gives you a number for how well you ran it. Most sellers have never once counted their objections, which is how you end up arguing for years about handling technique without ever checking whether the volume is falling.
