Good morning. You've been telling three different people the same sentence about the same problem. Two of them heard nothing.

The Pain Chain

The question

In the deal you're most confident about, can you write the one sentence you would use two levels above your contact, in that person's own units rather than your contact's? Most sellers carry a single sentence up three floors and then read the silence that follows as a slow quarter.

The idea

Michael Bosworth founded Solution Selling in 1983 around an unfashionable idea: that what a seller navigates isn't a need, it's a pain, and every pain has an owner. He published the method as Solution Selling in 1994. Keith Eades, who founded Sales Performance International and rewrote the method as The New Solution Selling in 2003, gave the idea its most useful diagram — the pain chain. It works like this. The operations manager's pain is late shipments. Late shipments are the sales director's pain, because customers leave. Departing customers are the finance director's pain, because the revenue forecast is theirs to defend in front of a board. One event, three altitudes, three completely different sentences about what it costs — and none of the three would recognise the other two as a description of their own problem. The trap is carrying one sentence up the building. The account you were given at the bottom is concrete, dated and true, which is exactly why it feels like the strongest thing you have; repeated two floors up in the language it arrived in, it lands as somebody else's inconvenience, and you get thanked. What travels upward is never the description. It's the translation.
