Morning. Before anyone can care what makes you different, they have to stop worrying you're not up to it.

The Parity Test
You've already picked the comparison you want to be judged against and the one difference that beats it, so work the question underneath: what does a buyer have to stop worrying about before that difference gets a hearing, and which of those worries is a stranger still carrying when they close your deck? Nobody inside your building can answer the second half. That's why it stays unanswered for years.
In 2002 the Harvard Business Review ran a short piece by three marketing academics — Kevin Lane Keller of Dartmouth's Tuck School, and Brian Sternthal and Alice Tybout of Northwestern's Kellogg School — called Three Questions You Need to Ask About Your Brand. Two of the three you've already worked: what the buyer files you against, and the one difference that beats it. That's the Day 45 exercise. The middle question is the one almost nobody runs. Points of parity are the associations you share with your rivals — what a buyer treats as the price of entry to the category, plus whatever a competitor is currently using against you. They aren't where you win. They're where you're allowed to compete, and the bar for them isn't superiority; it's good enough that the subject stops being the conversation. Miller Lite's 'tastes great, less filling' is four words doing both jobs, and the order isn't decoration: the beer had to be conceded as beer before fewer calories could be an argument. What makes parity so easy to skip is that it's the boring half. Difference gets the workshop and the homepage. Parity is a bar nobody in the room thought worth discussing, sitting underneath a buyer who still isn't sure you clear it.
