The Weak-Tie Search

The question

If you had to fill a hard role by the end of the month, whose names would you ring first — and how many of those people sit in the meetings you sit in, read what you read, and would hand you back the same three candidates you've already met twice? Your closest contacts aren't a network. They're a mirror.

The idea

Mark Granovetter's doctoral research at Harvard put a plain question to several hundred professional and managerial men in Newton, Massachusetts: how did you get this job? The largest group hadn't answered an advertisement or gone through an agency — they'd heard about it from a person. The interesting part was which person. Among those who found work through a contact, only about one in six saw that contact often, which he defined as at least twice a week. The rest saw them occasionally, or once a year or less: the former colleague, the friend of a friend, the person you sat beside at a conference. He published the theory in the American Journal of Sociology in 1973 as The Strength of Weak Ties, and it explains itself once you see it. Your close friends know each other and they know what you know, so the information circulating among them is information you already hold. A weak tie is a bridge into a network you're not in. Be clear about one thing, though: his survey and the modern replications both watched this from the candidate's side — how people found jobs, not how employers found people. Turning it around is an inference rather than a finding, and a sound one, because a candidate you haven't already met can only come from a network you're not in. Which makes the instinct to ring your three closest allies about a hard role precisely backwards.
