The Four Forces of Progress
How many of the people who told you this year that they were genuinely interested have since done nothing at all, and of that group, how many did you lose to a competitor rather than to the sheer effort of leaving what they already had?
Bob Moesta has spent his career interviewing people about purchases they had already made, rebuilding the weeks before a switch backwards from the moment of payment to the first thought — a method he developed with Chris Spiek at the Re-Wired Group and called the switch interview. What those interviews keep exposing is that four forces act on every switch, and they pull in opposite directions. The push of the situation: whatever about today has become intolerable. The pull of the new: what the alternative appears to promise. Working against both sit the habit of the present — everything already owned, paid for, learned and comfortable — and the anxiety of the new: what might go wrong, what I'd have to learn, how it looks if I'm the one who chose it. Clayton Christensen, Taddy Hall, Karen Dillon and David Duncan set the four out in Competing Against Luck in 2016, alongside Moesta's work for a Detroit condominium developer whose interested downsizers kept stalling for reasons no focus group had produced. Two of these you've met already — Day 4 calls the push a trigger, Day 71 prices the habit. What the four-force reading adds is the balance sheet: almost every team answers a stall by making the new thing more attractive, and that is one force out of four, rarely the one doing the blocking.
