The 80/20 Rule

The question

Which 20% of your work is producing 80% of your results — and can you name it right now?

The idea

The Pareto Principle — named after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noticed in 1906 that 20% of Italy's population owned 80% of its land — describes a universal imbalance between inputs and outputs. In any system, roughly 20% of causes produce roughly 80% of effects. Twenty percent of customers generate 80% of revenue. Twenty percent of features cause 80% of bugs. Twenty percent of your daily tasks drive 80% of your results. What makes it powerful is that it doesn't care about your industry or role. What makes it dangerous is that most people's days are dominated by the 80% that looks like work but produces little — because it's familiar, urgent, or satisfying to complete.
